Sewage spilled at Caspian plant

CASPIAN — West Iron County Wastewater Plant in Caspian has returned to normal operations after a sewage spill earlier this week, plant spokesman Robert Turbessi said Friday.

The plant reported a partially treated sewage spill Wednesday morning of about 5,000 gallons onto the grounds at the plant.

Also, about 18,600 gallons of partially treated sewage was discharged into the Iron River from Wednesday morning through Friday afternoon.

An excessive flow due to snow melt and rain caused the secondary treatment area to back up and spill over, Turbessi explained.

Effluent limits were met during the event and the partially treated wastewater that was discharged was disinfected to meet fecal coliform limitations, according to a notification filed with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department and The Daily News.

Starting at $3.50/week.
