Top 2022 graduates named at Florence

Paige Uren

FLORENCE, Wis. — The Florence County School District has announced its top seniors in the Class of 2022.

Graduation will be 7 p.m. Friday in the high school gymnasium.

The top seniors are:

— Paige Uren, daughter of Jim and Melissa Uren of Florence County, is valedictorian with a 4.0 grade-point average. Physics was her favorite subject.

In high school, Uren participated in National Honor Society, serving as vice president; yearbook; Together Our Responsibility Publicly Embraces Direction and Opportunity, or TORPEDOs; and Hi-Q. She was a band and jazz band member. Uren also was involved in basketball, serving as co-captain in 2021 and 2022; softball, as captain in 2022; and cross country.

Kiera Sullivan

Outside of school, she is a first-degree black belt in Kung Fu San Soo. She has worked at Barb’s Cafe as a dishwasher and waitress since 2019. Uren is a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church as well, where she has been a server and usher.

Uren has received several academic and solo and ensemble awards. This year she was in a class A percussion ensemble that received a first at the district level and a miscellaneous trio that went to state and received a first.

She has many scholar-athlete awards, academic all-conference awards and a 2nd team all-conference award in softball. She also received a certificate of merit from the Society of Women Engineers and placed in the top 10 for the National LEED Dream Home Contest in 2021.

Uren plans to pursue a physical therapy degree at Concordia University in Mequon, Wis.

— Kiera Sullivan lives in Florence with her parents, Henry Sullivan and Sarah Western. She is a co-salutatorian with a 3.99 GPA. Art and Spanish were her favorite subjects; she was a finalist in a statewide art competition.

Audrey Selden

In high school, Sullivan was in High-Q, National Honor Society and TORPEDOs. She participated in basketball, track and field and cross country, earning several athletic scholar awards and 1st Team All-Conference honors in cross country during her junior season.

Sullivan has volunteered at a number of locations, including the local elementary school and nursing home. This past summer, she worked as a watercraft inspector for Florence County Land Conservation.

In her free time, she loves to ski, go on canoe trips, draw and spend time with friends and family.

Sullivan plans to major in architecture at Washington University in St. Louis.

— Audrey Selden is the daughter of Chris and Ann Selden of Spread Eagle, Wis. She is a co-salutatorian with a 3.99 GPA in high school and earned many of Florence High School’s academic awards. Spanish was her favorite subject because she found the class engaging.

Makenzie Niehaus

In high school, Selden was in Hi-Q, forensics, and National Honor Society. She competed in basketball, cross country, and track and field, qualifying for the Wisconsin State High School Track Championships twice and placing fifth and third in her event. She received the Track MVP award twice and varsity letters for her other sports. Selden served as a captain for the 2022 basketball team as well.

Outside of school, she has worked for Florence County Land Conservation as a watercraft inspector for the past two summers. In the community, she was a member of TORPEDOs volunteer group, where her work included Hi-Q setup, Christmas in Florence and other volunteer activities.

In her free time, Selden enjoys outdoor activities. In the winter, her favorite hobby is downhill skiing. During the other seasons she enjoys swimming, hiking, biking and running. In addition, she loves to travel with her family and is always up for an adventure.

Selden plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall.

— Makenzie Niehaus, daughter of Ben and Melanie Niehaus of Florence, is ranked fourth in her class with a 3.963 GPA.

Evan Witynski

She has earned 28 college credits while in high school, with one of her favorite classes being Introduction to Business Law.

Niehaus has been on either high honor roll or superior honor roll through high school, in addition to earning academic awards in World History, English, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College PowerPoint, NWTC Word and NWTC Excel. She has also earned National Certiport Certification for both PowerPoint and Word.

Niehaus was president of Florence’s chapter of the National Honor Society. She also was a member of the forensics team, TORPEDOs and the Florence band and jazz band.

Niehaus won numerous awards with her musical performances at Solo Ensemble events. She participated in group events and individually, receiving several awards while playing a variety of instruments, most notably the saxophone and piano. She was a member of the forensics team as well and earned a state gold medal her freshman year and a critics choice gold her senior year at state — the highest recognition awarded at state competition. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, she was not able to participate in forensics her sophomore and junior year.

Outside of school, Niehaus is active within her church and helped with the church’s decorating committee and afterschool youth program called Kids’ Club.

Niehaus plans to seek a bachelor’s degree in social work at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay toward her goal of becoming a child advocacy lawyer.

— Evan Allan Witynski, of Florence, is the son of William Witynski and Bree Rittenhouse. He earned a 3.86 GPA in high school plus 25 college credits and a certificate in entrepreneurship from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. His favorite subjects were social studies, because he likes to learn about history, and math.

In high school, Witynski participated in football and Hi-Q. Outside of school, he was employed by the school district as maintenance and grounds custodian for the past two years. In his free time he enjoys hanging out with friends and lifting weights.

Witynski plans to major in accounting at Lakeland University in Sheboygan, Wis.
