IM OKs plans for Macker with up to 500 teams
Basketball tourney set for July 15-17 on downtown streets
IRON MOUNTAIN — Gus Macker basketball will return to Carpenter Avenue and possibly some neighboring streets next month as the city of Iron Mountain has approved an expanded map for the outdoor tournament.
Street closures will begin at 5 a.m. Friday, July 15, and remain through 7 p.m. Sunday, July 17.
Organizers have requested enough space for a 500-team tournament after last year’s event drew more than 200.
Planned street closures approved Monday by the city council are:
— Four blocks of Carpenter Avenue from south of Ludington Avenue to north of West C Street
— Two blocks of Hughitt Street from east of Prospect Avenue running east to the railroad track.
— Two blocks of West A Street from east of Prospect Avenue running east to the railroad track.
— About a block of West B Street from the driveway of Main Street Pizza east to the west end of the Kingsley North parking lot.
Last year’s tournament didn’t require courts east of Carpenter Avenue, but that will happen if there are more than 250 teams, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said.
If necessary, police will work with the organizers to establish temporary traffic control orders, he added.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Imagination Factory Children’s Museum. Team registration is available at https://www.macker.com/local/iron-mountain-mi. The deadline is June 27.
The council, in other action:
— Approved a parking lot closure at Iron Mountain and East A streets for the Iron Mountain Farmers and Artisans Market each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon through Oct. 15.
— Renewed its property and liability insurance coverage for two years with Michigan Municipal Risk Management Authority. The first year’s premium is $92,596, but the city anticipates a refund of roughly $40,000 from the authority’s assets, Stanchina said. The second-year premium is $94,052. The policy includes a self-funded portion that has a current balance of $439,000. The money, which is earning 4% annual interest, can be used to pay deductibles and other claims against the insurance.
— Approved the purchase of fire department records management software from EPR Systems USA at a setup cost of $4,480, plus an annual cost of $5,063 with a 3% increase for three years. The new FireWorks software will replace a Firehouse system that was increasing its charges by more than $5,000 annually, plus instituting a $7,115 setup fee, said Police and Fire Services Director Ed Mattson. With the approved switch, the yearly increase is expected to be $731. The new software provides an online firefighting training tool at no additional cost, Mattson said.
— Approved $6,232 to Payne and Dolan of Gladstone for removal of an existing storm sewer at the construction site of the TownPlace Suites by Marriott hotel at 200 S. Stephenson Ave.
— Accepted a $5,056 quote from UP International Trucks Inc. to replace a head gasket on a plow truck.
