Sagola club to help offer hunter safety program

SAGOLA — The Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club will host a Hunters Safety Field Day at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the clubhouse north of Channing.

Students will first need to take a hunters education online course through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Once completed, the student must register on the Michigan DNR website for the class on Aug. 20 at the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club. There is a strict limit of 25 students for this field day. Students must be pre-registered to attend.

The club’s youth program is coordinating the event.

“We do understand that hunters education has not been taught in two years thanks to COVID,” said youth program coordinator Tony Erickson. “We also understand that a hunter may only apply for the ‘apprentice license’ for only two years. However, with limited hunters education instructors, we will only have 25 students in this class.”

Those interested in obtaining certification as a hunters education instructor for Michigan can contact Erickson at 906-396-1119.

The Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club hopes to expand on both its hunters education and competitive youth shooting programs in the future.

For more information on either program, contact Erickson.

Starting at $3.50/week.
