Crystal Falls gets $250K state grant for city roads

Tens roads in the city of Crystal Falls will be improved under a $250,000 grant administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

In all, 28 villages and cities across the state with populations less than 10,000 will receive road funding grants totaling $5.1 million, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer stated in a news release Wednesday.

The funding comes through the Community Service Infrastructure Fund Category B program established by the Michigan Legislature in 2018. It serves as a stop-gap program to help fund road projects in small communities across the state.

The Crystal Falls projects include Erie Street, Floodstrand Road, Fairbanks Drive, Water Street, Wisconsin Avenue, Seventh Street, Runkle Lake Road, South Sixth Street, North Sixth Street and Rock Crusher Road.

The work is slated for 2025 and the grant covers 50% of the overall cost.

Grant awards statewide range from $54,000 to $250,000 for road resurfacing, culvert replacement, pavement crack sealing and other preservative measures.

According to MDOT, successful projects were selected, in part, because they had limited funding sources and were paired with planned infrastructure work — coordinated with other agencies — focused on extending the useful life of the road.

Other Upper Peninsula recipients include the city of Menominee, $240,000; the village of South Range, $116,000; and the city of Bessemer, $64,979.

Starting at $3.50/week.
