Serving the public or party?

EDITOR: Has our democracy evolved into a political system of party affiliation? The principals of our system of government were founded on the ideal of impartial and absolute rule of law for everyone and individual freedoms of free speech and thought. The idea was that elected officials would protect and defend those basic rights disregarding party affiliation. Opposition to party leaders in power was not defined as a threat or enemy of the state and immigrants the destruction of the nation, but that appears that be the working model of the Republican (MAGA) Party today. Letters to the editor should be kept as brief as possible but can be up to about 500 words. The letter must include the writer’s full, legal name, address and telephone number. Letters are to be signed with a single name, even if representing a group. Potentially libelous statements and personal attacks will not be published. Think twice on Bay millage

On Aug. 5, Dickinson County voters will be asked to approve another 20-year millage for Bay College. In other words, they are asking for millions more dollars from property owners in Dickinson County. While supporting education is important, it’s fair to ask some thoughtful questions before we commit to two more decades of property taxes. Bay College was generously welcomed into our community 20 years ago with donated land and public funding to build their local campus. In 2005, voters in Dickinson County approved a 20-year millage. President Donald Trump stated he would end the Russia-Ukraine war his first day in office. He made this insane statement a number of times. It’s not as if it was one of his looney-tune ideas of opening up Alcatraz again or buying Greenland or making Canada the 51st state. Defending the rights of others

It is time for the President to do everything in his power to free Kilmar Abrego Garcia and cease the kidnappings and illegal incarcerations of migrants in El Salvador. Our rights are supposed to be inalienable. They are meant to protect us from government overreach and oppression.
