A service dog is a working animal

You've seen me. I'm the lady in a power wheelchair with a yellow Labrador at her side. He's a service dog (extraordinaire), and I’m his imperfect handler. In my life, I have many roles — mom, friend, attorney, and volunteer. My dog, on the other hand, has one job: To pay attention to me. When he are I are indoors in public, he's always on leash. I know you love animals and that dogs love you, but I ask for your understanding that he's working, now, and please try not to distract him. Supports renewal of Bay IM millage

EDITOR: Thank you, Dickinson County residents. Twenty years ago, my parents, Ted and Eleanor Fornetti, donated family land in the hope that Bay College could have an Iron Mountain campus. Thanks to you, a millage was passed supporting the need to have access to affordable education and the Bay campus opened in 2007. Due to your actions, there have been numerous enhancements to the community. EDITOR: Pamela Trask’s recent letter raises important questions about the Bay College Iron Mountain Campus millage proposal set for Aug. 5. Feeling taxed enough already

EDITOR: Dickinson County property owners are being asked to approve yet another 20-year millage for Bay College. As someone who feels taxed enough already, I have to ask: When does it end? Twenty years ago, Bay College was gifted land here and funded its local campus with our tax dollars. It’s amounted to millions of our tax dollars over the past two decades! That was supposed to help them get on their feet. Now, two decades later, they’re asking us to sign up for 20 more years of taxes to support the college. Enough already for Bay IM

EDITOR: Bay College wants Dickinson County taxpayers to fund the Iron Mountain Campus for another 20 years. They’re technically a business based in Delta County. So can any business now request that our property taxes help them with their bills, too? They’ve already had 20 years of our support and a beautiful campus that millions of our tax dollars built for them. That should be enough. On Aug. 5, vote NO on this millage.

On the Bay IM millage

EDITOR: Voted for the millage and returned my ballot. When I earned my initial degree from Bay de Noc Community College, the only choice for me and others was to commute to Escanaba five days a week. Adults of varying ages spent their week between two time zones, spending hours and money in the tank on the highway. Today we have the Bay College Iron Mountain campus right here in our own county. Adults can upgrade their skills, and high school grads can often save thousands by beginning their higher education locally. But that isn't really the issue, is it? There are those who oppose ...
