Debating the debates

EDITOR: On Monday, April 15, the AP reported in your paper that all the major news organizations signed on to a letter urging 2024 presidential and vice presidential debates. So far, only Donald Trump has publicly agreed that he wants to debate. Joe Biden said on March 8, “it depends on his (Trump’s) behavior.” And the AP goes on to say, “the president was visibly miffed ... by the first 2020 debate, at one point saying, ‘will you shut up?’” However, the AP neglected to report that Joe Biden lied several times during that debate, including that Hunter’s laptop was ...

Answer letter on ‘predictions’

EDITOR: This is a direct response to Gary Merrill’s latest letter (April 11), as there was much misinformation in his letter. Under President Joe Biden, the unemployment rate hit a half-century low of 3.4%. Former president Donald Trump’s lowest number was 3.5%. The unemployment rate stands currently at 3.7%. The unemployment rate was 6.4% when Trump left office. Gross Domestic Product has risen 22% under President Biden. Trump’s total was 14%. Black unemployment has hit an all-time-low under the current President. Trump claimed it would never be lower than his under his ...

Not so simple as just saying it

EDITOR: Just a quick thought and a reminder. You cannot declare yourself to be a medical doctor. You cannot declare yourself to be a five-star military officer. You cannot declare yourself a college graduate. You cannot even declare yourself to be a certified automobile mechanic. All these things must be earned by a declared and clearly understood program of actions. The same goes for declaring yourself an Evangelical. Even if you are a Bible salesman. Donald A. Lison Florence, Wis.

Fair elections

EDITOR: Is voting really important? The definition of democracy is a system of government where the power of governing is vested in the people through elected representation. In this case, the people mean all people living in the area boundaries defined as citizens in our case except felons in some case. It is clear we have never accomplished this. When the country was established, two things allowed for the existence of slavery, and the rejection of minority and women. At first only white men with property could vote, and voting rules were left to the states. Since in many ...

A look back at his predictions

I wrote the below Letter to the Editor in May 2021 and I wish I were wrong regarding my predictions. Very sadly, my predictions have come true and even more severe. I have only updated our projected debt and the very last sentence below from my May 2021 letter — After electing an affable, “man of the people” politician as President, we saw our country plunge into one calamity after another. We had seen long lines at the pump, skyrocketing inflation, exponential increases in gas prices, conflict with Iran, high unemployment, very weak job growth and rising tensions between Israel ...

USPS’s ignorance of the needs in UP inexcusable

EDITOR: U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman sent this letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy after a disappointing response from U.S. Post Office officials at the public input meeting on the future of the Iron Mountain Processing and Distribution Center in Kingsford — I write to you following the April 1, 2024, public input meeting on the U.S. Postal Service’s (USPS) proposed changes to the Iron Mountain Processing and Distribution Center (PDC) in Kingsford, Michigan. My staff and I attended the meeting, and the wholly deficient presentation by USPS prompted this letter. While I had ...
