Supports drive for AxMiTax

EDITOR: After reading Dr. Dougoveto’s letter to the editor clearly explaining the AxMiTax.org petition, I recently signed the petition being circulated in Dickinson County. Then I started thinking, “Why is eliminating property taxes so important?” This isn’t just about reducing financial burdens but fundamentally changing how we view and value property ownership in Michigan. We will actually own something and be happy! Property taxes are more than an annual payment. They constantly threaten countless Michigan residents’ financial stability and peace of mind. From ...

Light at the Inn shutting down

It is with regret that Light at the Inn of Dickinson County has decided to suspend its mission outreach. This has been a most difficult decision and will be effective as of June 1. In the spring of 2016, representatives from a number of churches within Dickinson County recognized the need for some type of temporary shelter for the homeless community in our area. Within months this group established an administrative board, obtained their 501(c )(3) documentation, secured financial and community support and planned for a winter rotating shelter to open in the fall. This project began as ...

Time to end the property tax

EDITOR: When I first heard about the AxMITax proposal it sounded great to me, eliminate all property tax and no one would lose their property due to their failure to pay their taxes. This would be wonderful for the citizens of Michigan and I could easily support this. Then I began to hear and read of all the objections to this proposal, all the ways that our county would suffer if it were to pass. Supposedly, it would hurt the schools, the library, the ambulance services, the senior citizen programs, and numerous other entities. So, I began to research the issue and here is some of ...

Bergman votes no on Ukraine aid

U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman did it again. Michigan’s First District Congressman voted against HR 8035, The Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act. It seems Bergman doesn’t understand the support people in this district have for Ukraine — The Facebook group Yoopers for Ukraine; the Tiffany Ampe family, which adopted two Ukrainian children and helped send $100,000 in supplies to the Ukraine, (WLUC-TV news report); Chef Chad Soyou of the Wilson Creek Cafe in Powers, who has collected for Ukrainian relief; people of Ukrainian ancestry in the western U.P. (where Jack allegedly ...

Lorinser blasts Bergman vote

The Bob Lorinser for Congress campaign issued this statement in the wake of U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman’s vote Saturday against aid for Ukraine. “Last night, we witnessed a stark reminder of why integrity, honesty, and wisdom are not just virtues, but absolute necessities in our leaders. “Rep. Bergman’s vote against aiding Ukraine speaks volumes about the representation we lack, the values he cannot uphold, and the leadership Michigan’s 1st District does not have. “Let’s be clear. Integrity isn’t just a word to toss around; it’s a promise to uphold the values we ...

Concerned about levels of PFAS

We all deal with trying to buy foods that are not full of harmful chemicals, pesticides or herbicides to stay healthy. The large corporations don’t seem to care about the types of chemicals they use on products. Thousands of these chemicals are contained in PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), forever chemicals that do not break down and so far there is no way to completely clean up the water or land they pollute. It is estimated that 97% of all people in the US already have PFAS in their bodies. It is harmful at certain levels and can cause cancer and other health ...
