Thought on the presidential race

EDITOR: At this time when candidates are running for president, I am amazed that instead of telling us what they will do to help us, the candidates would rather tear each other down. I don’t care what joke or comment someone made 40 years ago. I know I have made some comments that I am not proud of, but I don’t need it dredged up during a job search. Rather than dwell on every unfortunate comment made years ago, we need to look at how they have governed since then. Tell us your plans and how you are going to pay for them. LaFave needs to better secure his firearms

As a past member of the National Rifle Association, I was bewildered by Beau LaFave’s account of where he kept his guns at the so-called “U.P. Embassy” in Lansing when they were stolen after his “open carry” escapade at the legislature’s joint session. Sorry to see DCHS doctor go

I recently was treated at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital Emergency Department by Dr. John Hallfrisch. My wife and I were happy he was working that day because he has taken care of me in the past and we have found him to be a thoughtful, caring professional and very thorough. When I told him that I was glad he was on duty that morning, he mentioned that in May he would no longer be an ED doctor for Dickinson County Healthcare System because of staffing changes. We have always been given excellent care at DCHS and are thankful that we have such a good facility in our community. ...

Facing ‘the toughest game’

Recently, I came across a quote from the poet Edgar Guest in a poem titled, “On Quitting”: “The toughest game you will find is to make your body obey your mind.” The words are like a bolt of lightning in how they sum up life that all of us experience every day. How many times each day does the mind say to us to clean this, fix that, work out more, read that book, contact an old friend or relative we have been out of touch with, etc., yet we fail to do so. Support health department levy

As a local family physician for the past 14 years, I cannot fully emphasize the impact Dickinson County Health Department has on the well-being of our community. I am a strong believer in the education provided for maternal-fetal health. The health department provides this service exceptionally well. It is very important for our young families to have support and education for healthy eating, healthy vaccination practices, breastfeeding and great parenting skills.
