Northern Stars U19 soccer win first two games
NIAGARA, Wis. — Northern Stars U19 boys soccer team is off to a 2-0 start.
The shorthanded Stars rallied for a 4-3 win over Greenville to start the season on May 12.
The Stars, with only 10 players available, played to a 1-1 tie in the first half after an Owen Caudell goal on a rebound of a blocked shot.
Early in the second half, Greenville scored twice to lead 3-1. Goals from David Brule and Ben Backlund evened the score.
“David Brule made a nice dribble move to create space for a shot which he drilled into the upper left corner of the net from 18 yards away,” said Stars coach Greg Kulas. “Then Michael Kulas launched a long goal kick which Jurgen Kleiman one touched to Ben Backlund for a one-touch shot and a tie game.”
Stars broke the tie when Kleiman lofted a corner kick which Pablo Cano Sarobe headed in for the winning goal.
“The entire team then had to withstand a flurry of shots in the final five minutes to preserve the victory,” coach Kulas said.
The Stars blanked Ashwaubenon 4-0 on Saturday.
Michael Colavecchi opened the scoring with a finish off a cross from Backlund.
In the second half, Kleiman recorded a hat trick, with assists from Caudell and Caleb Plumley.
“Kleiman scored twice in the first five minutes of the half to give us a little cushion,” Kulas said. “We did a great job of dominating the ball possession, especially in the second half. The Ashwaubenon goalkeeper made several nice saves to keep the game close.”
