Jets denied in district preview versus Wolves

POWERS — The Carney-Nadeau volleyball team swept the North Central Jets 3-0 (25-7, 25-4, 25-17) here Tuesday in a preview of a district match as the teams will face off again Monday in the first round of the Division 4 District 99 playoffs.

The Wolves’ serving propelled them through the majority of this Skyline Central Conference tilt. Sandra Boulton put together an eight-point service run early on — including three aces — to put the Wolves ahead 10-2. The Jets (0-18) found themselves unable to counter and just a few points later, the Wolves’ Haley Ernest added a five-point run to make it 19-5.

“I was really encouraged by our net play,” Jets’ coach Rick Mick said. “There’s some things we need to clean up. We had a lot of calls in the net today, so we’ve got to work on that. But I was encouraged by the amount of hands we got on blocks, and we covered our tips. What we need to work on is defending the attack.”

Carney (23-5-4, 10-0 SCC) took a 9-1 lead in the second set with a five-point run from Jules Thoune. Shortly after, Boulton outdid herself and added a nine-point run to make it 19-2.

The Jets regained possession briefly when a Wolves ball went into the net — also marking the Jets’ first non-penalty point of the set — but quickly fell under three more aces from Carney with Ernest acing the last point.

“We did a great job,” Wolves’ coach Steve Kedsch said. “We were trying some new stuff tonight, just getting ready for districts. It worked real well.”

North Central found some success in the third set, including two aces from Alex Neville and two from Maddie Dani. The Jets chipped away and accumulated 17 points and a short run from Gabby Lucas before Carney ended the match with a kill from Liana Blahnik.

“For two and a half sets, I think we played mistake-free volleyball,” Kedsch said. “Halfway through that third set, I think we let up a little bit, and North Central took advantage of it.”

Carney, which won the jayvee match 2-0, visits Menominee Thursday. North Central is off until it faces Carney again Monday in the district opener.

“We’re going to work on staying mentally sharp (heading into the districts) and reducing our unforced errors,” Kedsch said. “Our offense and defense are doing well, so hopefully we can carry that good, solid play into the tournament.”

Mick is optimistic about another matchup.

“We’re going to review (this game), and we’re going to learn as much as we can,” Mick said. “We have three practices between now and then. I think the biggest thing, on our part, was that we had spurts of enthusiasm and spurts of a little less than enthusiasm. We have to correct that. We have to be enthusiastic, and we have to fight hard the whole time.”
