Nordics handle Broncos

HARRIS — Alaska Peterson reached a major milestone here Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Bark River-Harris Broncos from dropping a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-15) volleyball decision to the North Dickinson Nordics.

The sophomore setter collected 11 assists in this Skyline Central Conference match, running her season total to a school-record 256 on Parents’ and Senior Night.

“That’s quite an accomplishment,” said BR-H coach Jen Ives. “We rely on our sophomores a lot. Our seniors, Makena Lockwood and Bonnie Cortinas, also had a nice night.”

In the third set, BR-H was within 14-11 in the third set following a kill by junior Alexis Berg before the Nordics began to pull away.

The Nordics gained a 10-5 lead on a hitting error by the Broncos in the finale.

BR-H then took advantage of a pair of Nordic hitting miscues before trimming its deficit to 10-8 on a service ace by sophomore Tressa Ives.

The Nordics (10-4 overall, 6-3 SCC), however, didn’t allow the Broncos to get any closer.

“After being so flat against Forest Park (in Thursday’s 3-0 loss at Crystal Falls), it was nice to see we had a lot more energy tonight,” said Nordics’ coach Sandy Haustein. “When the girls made a mistake, they kept their heads up. This is a great win for our team.”

Three kills by senior Briana Smith helped the Nordics get a fast start in the second set and they quickly gained a 5-0 lead.

BR-H closed within 6-5 before the Nordics extended their lead to 10-5 on ace by Smith.

A passing error then gave the serve back to the Broncos, but the Nordics got a sideout and an 11-6 cushion on a kill by senior Skye Ledzian.

Ledzian followed by five straight service points, including an ace, giving the Nordics an insurmountable 16-6 advantage.

In the opener, the Broncos were within 9-7 on a block by junior Kassidy Roll.

After a sideout, a nine-point service run by senior Kylie Gustafson put that set out of reach as the Nordics gained an 18-7 advantage.

Three Nordics became 100-percent servers with Smith getting all 16 of her serves in. Ledzian was 9-for-9 and sophomore Vanessa Lindholm finished 5-for-5.

“We feel they’re a good serving team, but felt we should have had some better passes,” said coach Ives. “We had way too many errors and gave them too many freeballs. We’ve been practicing on serve receives and made some progress, but kind of fell apart on those tonight.”

Ledzian collected 13 kills and Smith finished with 12 for the Nordics, who host Norway in their regular-season finale Thursday.

“Brianna did a nice job at the net and Skye did a good job placing the ball,” said Haustein. “Our sophomore (Chrislyn Inglese) also did a good job. Our setter passed the ball well and we served real well. I think we shanked only one serve tonight.”

Lockwood led the Broncos with seven kills and six digs. Tressa Ives added four kills and three digs. Roll and sophomore Cara Zawacki had three kills and two blocks apiece.

The Broncos, who won the jayvee match (16-25, 25-23, 15-10), end their regular season at Forest Park Thursday.

North Dickinson — Smith (four aces, 12 kills); Ledzian (one ace, 13 kills).

Bark River-Harris — Ives (one ace, four kills, three digs); Berg (one ace, one kill); Lockwood (seven kills, six digs); Roll and Zawacki (three kills, two blocks); Peterson (11 assists); Britton (five digs); Flagstadt (four digs).
