Modeltowners outlast Mountaineers in physical contest

GWINN — Iron Mountain battled Gwinn almost to the wire before falling 50-40 in Mid-Peninsula Conference girls basketball Friday.

“It was a really physical game,” said Iron Mountain coach Katelynn Johnson, noting just three free throw attempts by the Mountaineers.

Claire Mongrain led IM with 12 points and three assists. Annslee Runsat added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Tori Sorensen had seven points and nine boards.

Scoring only one point in the second quarter, the Mountaineers trailed 27-15 at halftime but cut the margin to five entering the final frame.

“It was a game of runs,” said Johnson, encouraged by a 37% shooting performance. “Defensively, we struggled a little bit.”

Reagan Lundholm, who scored eight points, went out with an injury, as did Chloe Bianco.

Iron Mountain won the jayvee game 48-30 behind 23 points from Callie Bianco and 21 by Chloe Maycroft.

The Mountaineers (0-3, 0-1 Mid-Pen) will host West Iron on Monday.
