Unbeaten Mustangs shut down North Dickinson

FELCH — Undefeated Munising overwhelmed North Dickinson 74-39 in boys Skyline Conference basketball Monday at the Carl F. Lemin Jr. gymnasium.
Munising was powered by 22 points from senior Austin Killips, with 18 points from behind the 3-point arc.
The Mustangs held a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter, then their transition game got into high gear. North Dickinson began to turn the ball over with Munising pushing the tempo on both ends of the floor using a half-court trap. The Mustangs turned the ND turnovers into fast break points.
“We had way too many turnovers, it was probably a two-to-one margin in that area,” said Nordics head coach Chris Mattson. “They probably also outrebounded us by the same margin, and they took advantage of both.”
Munising head coach Terry Kienitz noted he stresses the up tempo style of offense.
“Lets get out and run the court, then trap them at half or three-quarter court and force turnovers,” he said. “That’s the style of play I belive in, and when I have the kids to do it, that’s what we run.”
Kienitz also noted that he also stresses quick ball movement in their half court offensive sets, which is something the Mustangs did often and well, especially in the second half.
“They went from free throw line to baseline very quickly in transition. We have to be more fluent in our offense and that needs to change going forward,” said Mattson.
Cameron Schultz led the Nordics in scoring with 19 points, and sophomore Maximus Mattson added 10 points.
Josh Huotari netted 11 points for Munising, with freshman Kane Nebel chipping in 10.
The 6-0 Mustangs stay on the road when they travel to Rapid River Wednesday night for SCC action. ND, which falls to 1-3, travels to Mid Peninsula Thursday night, also an SCC game.
Munising won the JV game 61-14.
