IRONWOOD – Norway wrapped up its ski season with a second-place showing at the U.P. Finals held Tuesday at Powderhorn Mountain.

The Knights sat in third place down 14 points to Ironwood after the slalom but a third-place showing by Jake Munn in the giant slalom and a fourth from Gabby Carey pushed Norway into second overall.

Marquette won the team title.

Maria Fornetti added an eighth-place finish in the giant slalom for Norway.

“We struggled in the slalom, despite Gabby’s fourth and Maria’s 10th in that event,” Norway coach John Buttinger said. “Jake, Brooke Bittinger and Peyton Johnson all skied out of the course and had to hike to finish which hurt. The new snow made for some unusual ruts in the course that a number of skiers on all the teams had a hard time navigating.

“We were lucky to have great clean runs by both Gabby and Maria to keep us in position. Gabby had one of her best days on the high school circuit and it could not have come at a better time. She was solid and fast on all four runs.”

Munn, a junior, and Carey, a sophomore, both earned All-U.P. honors. Munn was a first team selection, while Carey landed on second team.

To earn All-U.P., a racer needs to show they can ski fast and consistent in all conditions at multiple hills. A total of eight races are combined to determine the All-U.P. list.

“It is a tribute to how hard Jake and Gabby worked, and they earned their awards,” Bittinger said.

Bittinger (sophomore) and Fornetti (freshman) both finished just out of the second-team selections.

“We had a great season despite fielding the four girls and one boy in a boys division,” Bittinger said. “Heading into this season, we anticipated taking last or near last in all the races, but we ended up being the second best team in the UP behind only Marquette. We are already looking forward to improving on these results next season.”
