Wonders, Mountaineers slam Ishpeming, 82-50

Ron Deuter/The Daily News IRON MOUNTAIN’S FOSTER Wonders elevates for a layup past Ishpeming’s Ben Pruett during the first half of Friday’s boys basketball game.

IRON MOUNTAIN — In a spectacular offensive showing, junior Foster Wonders scored 20 of his game-high 32 points in the first quarter, and Iron Mountain cruised past Ishpeming 82-50 in boys basketball here Friday night.

Wonders’ night included 11 rebounds and four steals and a first-quarter slam dunk, as the Mountaineers built a 25-point lead.

Teammate and point guard Marcus Johnson netted 20 points and dished out seven assists, as the U.P.S.S.A. No. 1 Mountaineers remained unbeaten at 13-0 (8-0 in the West PAC, and 9-0 in the Mid Peninsula Conference).

“We got off to a great start again tonight, and the kids played hard throughout the game,” said Mountaineers head coach Harvey “Bucky” Johnson. “We had a couple of defensive breakdowns and didn’t shoot free throws very well, but those are things we can work on this coming week.”

The dual conference matchup was very one- sided the majority of the game, off of the dynamic first quarter of Wonders. He was feeling a scoring groove and his teammates were feeding him the ball.

The No. 2 state-ranked Mountaineers’ starting five share the ball well and they all move well without the ball. They find the teammate with the best look at the basket, or to get themselves in position to receive the basketball at any given time.

“The more we play, the better we’re getting. Not only the starting five, our bench players as well. We’re picking up on the style of play that we want to play, and gelling as we go along,” coach Johnson said.

The Hematites really couldn’t get into any type of offensive rhythm. The whirlwind first quarter took the wind out of their sails and they never recovered.

Ishpeming head coach George Niemi was realistic about how the game went and what playing Iron Mountain is like.

“They’re a really good basketball team,” he said. “And the scary thing about them is, it isn’t only Johnson and Wonders. The other three guys on the floor are contributing as well.”

The Hematites kept their heads up and their frustrations in check.

“The boys did battle back a little in the second half, but it was too much to overcome with Iron Mountain’s big lead,” Niemi said.

Throughout the game, once their huge lead was established, coach Johnson blended some of his bench players into the action with a starter or two remaining on the floor. He also used his entire bench for the majority of the final quarter, with the starters and first few players that usually come off the bench first standing up and cheering on their teammates.

Ishpeming (4-8) remains on the road Monday, playing at non-conference opponent Bark River-Harris. The Mountaineers are off until Friday when they travel to another dual conference foe Gwinn.

The JV game was won by the Mountaineers by a score of 56-50. Joey Colavecchi led all scorers with 21 points, while Zeke Runsat chipped in 11 points. Logan Hurkmans led the Hematites with 18 points, with Alec Sundberg chipping in 15 points.
