NMU upsets Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS — Northern Michigan, an eight seed which barely qualified for conference tournament play, knocked off top-seeded Ferris State 70-69 in a GLIAC quarterfinal upset Tuesday night.

With NMU clinging to its one-point lead in the game’s waning moments, Ferris State (27-6, 16-4) stole an inbounds pass. That gave the Bulldogs a chance for a final shot, but it missed at the buzzer and NMU held on for the win. Ben Wolf, a red-shirt freshman, led NMU with a career-best 22 points and 11 rebounds. Sam Taylor added 21 points. NMU (13-16, 9-11 GLIAC) faces No. 4 seed Northwood in a GLIAC semifinal Saturday.

Michigan Tech, a three seed, won its quarterfinal 75-56 over No. 6 seed Saginaw Valley State.

The Huskies were led in scoring by Owen White with 22 points. Kyle Monroe had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Trent Bell (14 points), and Dawson Bilski (10 points) also hit double figures.

Tech plays at No 2 seed Grand Valley State in the semifinals Saturday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
