Nordics’ Smith, West Iron’s Nelson tabbed all-state third team by Detroit Free Press
DETROIT — North Dickinson guard Brianna Smith and West Iron County center Emily Nelson have received additional postseason honors. They have both been named third-team all-state by the Detroit Free Press — Smith in Division 4 and Nelson in Division 3.
Nelson, a Michigan Tech recruit was an All-U.P. First Team selection in 2019 and 2020 and was named to the Dream Team in the West-PAC this season. She averaged 13.2 points, 12 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game this season.
“She was such an unselfish player, it’s nice to see her get rewarded for all of her hard work,” said West Iron head coach Eric Shamion. “This is a well-deserved honor for Emily.”
Smith, was an All-U.P. Second Team selection in 2019, while being named the Player of the Year in the Skyline Central Conference and to the all-defensive team, in both her junior and senior seasons. She averaged 12.8 points, 5.2 assists, five rebounds and three steals per game this season, while being named to the All-UP First team.
“Brianna is the most modest player, with her amount of talent, that anyone could find,” said North Dickinson head coach Kirk Mattson.
“She’s the definition of a point guard, a leader on and off the court. Next year when don’t have her on the team, we’re going to realize how valuable of player she was to our team.”
