IM Golds U-19 falls, 6-3

MENOMINEE — The Menominee baseball team was matched up against a very good Iron Mountain squad on Tuesday at Spies Field in Menominee and thanks to some heroics at the plate from Andrew Schroeder and Keaton Uecke, the Red Wave came away with a 6-3 victory to move to 3-0 on the season.

“We’re really happy with the fact that we’re playing baseball again with the fans and everything,” Iron Mountain coach Paul Julian said. “These are two very good, well coached teams. Both sides had very good pitching, we just didn’t capitalize the way we needed to in some ways. There were a few close calls at the plate and third base, but it was a true baseball game. We play these guys again Friday and we can’t wait to get back out there.”

The first few innings were a pitcher’s duel between Schroeder and Iron Mountain’s Caleb Johnson and IM struck first in the top of the second inning. Jessie Julian hit a two-out double to left center and Johnson followed up with a bloop single over the head of Menominee second basemen Ethan Russell for an RBI base knock to take a 1-0 advantage.

Johnson was able to tie up the Menominee batters through the first four innings, allowing just five baserunners on two hits and a few errors, and IM put up another run in the top of the fifth to go up 2-0 with just nine outs remaining for the Red Wave.

Leading off the bottom half of the fifth for Menominee was the No. 8 hitter Hunter Goldschmidt who lined a single to right field and was followed up by Russell who drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Schroeder stepped up to the dish for the Red Wave, and sent a no-doubter over the fence in left field to give Menominee a 3-2 lead with still no outs in the game.

Next to the plate for Menominee was Jaden Werner, and he roped a double over the center fielder’s head and came around to score on a fielder’s choice to give Menominee a 4-2 lead heading into the top of the sixth.

Werner got the ball to start the sixth inning for Menominee, spelling the end of the day for Schroeder who went five innings and gave up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

CJ Bolo led off the sixth with a single to center and after stealing second base, he scored on Jessie Julian’s sacrifice fly to deep left field.

In Menominee’s half of the sixth, Uecke got his turn at the plate and put the game out of reach with a two-out, two-RBI double to left to give the Red Wave a 6-3 advantage and Werner closed it out in the top of the seventh.

“Those two out hits are killers and that was a great hit for Keaton,” Lauzer said. “Those kind of hits can be demoralizing for the other team especially when it scores some runs.”
