IRON MOUNTAIN — There will be Labor Day weekend baseball held at LiUNA Field in Iron Mountain. The U.P. Hardball Classic will take place Saturday through Monday, with a total of 11 games to be played over the three- day tournament.
Tournament organizer and manager Eddie Felton notes that seven teams entered this year’s tournament. Some of them are new teams, others have played for many years.
The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with games scheduled every two hours, the last game starting at 4 p.m. Sunday has the same schedule, with three games being played on championship Monday — 10 a.m. and noon for the semifinal games, and the championship game will be held at 2 p.m.
Oven King Pizza of Escanaba will take on 2019 tournament runners-up Dauman Electric of Fall River, Wis. to kick off the tournament at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Oven King fields a roster mainly of Bay College players. Fall River is southwest of Beaver Dam, Wis.
At noon, a long time participant in the tournament, the Hortonville/Greenville (Wis.) Stars will take on Appleton (Wis.) ‘The Bar’. Felton notes that ‘The Bar’ squad has played in the tournament for around 20 years.
The 2 p.m. game Saturday will place Camp Hookey of Menomonee Falls, Wis. against defending champions Fox Cities. The Fox Cites team has won the tournament at least eight of the last 10 years Felton noted.
The Iron Mountain-Kingsford-Norway 19U team from this summer will play at 4 p.m. versus the winner of the 10 a.m. game.
“I would like to thank everyone who has already helped out and is going to help out with the tournament this weekend,” Felton said. He points to Paul Julian, Dek Forstrom, Brian Giachino and John Sacchetti as all having a huge role in the success of the tournament.
Felton also wishes the Felch Labor Day Tournament the best for a successful weekend.
