HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos were tested but persevered here Tuesday night in a 3-0 (25-16, 29-27, 26-24) volleyball triumph over the North Dickinson Nordics.

BR-H, which came from behind to take the second and third sets, trailed 18-12 following a six-point service run by sophomore Micah Lindholm in the finale.

The Nordics still led 21-15 after a service ace by junior Vanessa Lindholm.

BR-H then got a sideout and climbed within 21-20 on senior Kassidy Roll’s block on junior Eleigh Stout.

North Dickinson made it 22-20 lead on a sideout, then committed defensive, passing and hitting errors and fell behind 23-22.

The Broncos still trailed 24-23 after a passing error but secured the decision on three straight Nordics’ miscues.

“This was a hard-fought match,” said BR-H coach Jennifer Ives. “We knew North Dickinson had a good team. We didn’t know what to expect because we had been under a 14-day quarantine (due to Covid-19), but the girls stepped up when they had to.”

In the second set, the Broncos trailed 20-13 a block by junior Kassandra Cary.

After the teams exchanged sideouts, senior Selena Britton served for three points, including an ace, which brought BR-H within 21-18.

The teams again exchanged sideouts, enabling the Nordics to temporarily hang on to their three-point lead (22-19).

North Dickinson followed with a passing and pair of hitting miscues, enabling the Broncos to tie the score at 22.

BR-H went ahead 23-22 on an ace by junior Cara Zawacki and took a 24-22 lead on a kill by junior Alaska Peterson.

The Nordics responded with a three-point run, regaining the lead at 25-24 on a two-hit violation by the Broncos.

BR-H still trailed 27-26 before trying the score on a sideout. A kill by Tressa Ives gave the Broncos a 28-27 lead, and a passing error by the Nordics ended that set.

“The girls got a little nervous in the end,” said first-year Nordics’ coach Taylor Johnson. “The second and third sets could have gone either way. Bark River-Harris has a very smart team. They know where to place the ball and kept their composure under pressure. Although, we did a lot of things right. I think this was a better match than 3-0. I thought it’d be a good test for both teams.”

North Dickinson was within 14-12 before BR-H got a sideout and six consecutive service points by senior Allison Richer for an insurmountable 21-12 cushion.

Cary finished with seven kills and six blocks. Junior Chrislyn Inglese collected five kills and six blocks, and classmate Ashton Hord had 16 digs.

“I thought our serving started strong, then we started making some errors,” said Johnson. “It’s a shame we couldn’t pull it off. We gave up too many free balls.”

BR-H also won the jayvee match (24-26, 25-13, 15-2). The Nordics visit Rapid River Monday.
