Niagara powers past Iron Mountain

(Theresa Proudfit/The Daily News) IRON MOUNTAIN’S MCKENNA Smith (23) and Lily Verrette (16) elevate to attempt a block against Niagara’s Julia Brown Monday evening at Mountaineer Gymnasium.

IRON MOUNTAIN — In non-conference volleyball action Monday night, Niagara swept Iron Mountain 25-16, 25-19, 25-16.

“The girls came out strong tonight. We had some great volleys as Iron Mountain is known for their scrappy play,” said Niagara head coach Carol St. Arnauld. “In the second set, we had some uncharacteristic missed serves and miscommunication, but the girls recovered and finished the third set with confidence.”

“Our serving by Lulu McCash and Alyssa Mendini, kept us in the game,” said Iron Mountain head coach Jeanne Newberry. “Also, we had key blocks from McKenna Smith and Annslee Runsat but it wasn’t enough to move the momentum in our favor. We are still lacking in communication and not reading our opponent’s hitting quick enough.”

Alyssa Cretton led the Lady Badgers with 23 kills and 19 digs. Morgan Borchardt had 33 assists, while Bailey Pearson chipped in 14 digs. Abby Wells had 12 digs and Julia Brown tacked on 13 digs of her own.

“Monday was our fourth match in seven days and we play Laona-Wabeno tonight. I’m going to continue to push my girls to elevate their play as we have an enormous amount of talent,” said St. Arnauld.

The Mountaineers remain home for parent’s night tonight, as West PAC Conference foe Houghton comes to town. Niagara’s match against the Rebels is at Wabeno High School.
