NIAGARA, Wis. — Coleman senior Logan Zeitler led all scorers with 16 points as the Cougars stifled Niagara 60-12 in Marinette-Oconto Conference boys basketball Tuesday night at Niagara High School.
Cayden Bintz and Tieg Sadowski each tallied 11 points for Coleman in their first game of the season. Niagara, who slipped to 0-3, couldn’t muster up much offensively throughout the game.
Niagara’s only three points of the first half came from senior point guard Dawson Lincoln on a field goal at the 12:20 mark of the half, and a free throw with 1:13 remaining.
“We couldn’t score, and we had way too many turnovers,” said Niagara head coach Steve Derwinski. “We can’t continue to average 25 turnovers per game, and we shot 27% from the free-throw line tonight, that’s not gonna cut it. If we don’t get ourselves better, it’s going to be a long season.”
Coleman pushed the tempo of the game, which resulted a several fast-break points. Offensively, they played solid in their half-court sets as well.
“We turned the ball over too many times in the first half, and we also missed too many easy baskets near the basket in the first half, but we can clean that up,” said Coleman head coach Tim Forner. “For our first outing of the year, our defense needs to get better, but as a team, it was a good win and I am pleased to get it.”
Niagara remains home, as they host Gillett on Monday in another M&O Conference game. Niagara then hosts M&O foe St Thomas Aquinas Academy on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 3:30 p.m.
