FLORENCE, Wis. — Three-point field goals were a hot commodity Thursday night — with the teams canning a combined 21 — as Goodman-Pembine defeated Northern Lakes Conference foe Florence 69-62 at Florence High School.
Boone Larison led all scorers with 34 points, draining seven 3-pointers of his own.
Goodman-Pembine got off to a fast start, getting out to an early 12-6 lead, with Larison getting hot from behind the arc early on. The Bobcats were lethargic on the defensive end of the floor for nearly the whole first half.
The Patriots led 26-20 at halftime, as their half-court offense was flowing well with whomever was on the floor at a given time, moving extremely well without the basketball.
“I have been teaching the kids to move without the basketball, but keeping their eyes on it since they were in seventh grade,” said G-P head coach Joe Nutt.
Throughout the first half, the Patriots used a 2/3 half court defense. As the second half began, they were in a half to 3/4 court man to man press. Florence came out of the locker room a ball of fire, and went on a 7-0 in the first 1:38 of the half to take the lead 27-26.
With the momentum of the game switched in their favor, the Bobcats’ Braden Boettcher caught fire. The senior canned seven three-pointers in the second half, half of them from at least a step or two behind the three-point arc.
The second half was very see-saw, with the Patriots re-taking the lead and re-shifting the momentum of the game into their favor at 52-49, with 6:58 remaining.
Less than three minutes later, G-P, back in their 2/3 defense, led 60-51, causing Florence head coach Bryan Bomberg to call a time out.
“Coming out for the second half, we had energy and we were moving our feet,” Bomberg said. “In the first half, we were flat and had almost no energy on defense. That somewhat began to happen again in last part of the game.”
With the Patriots ahead 62-51, the Bobcats went on a scoring run of their own and tightened the game back up when sophomore Evan Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining to get the Bobcats within five points at 64-59. After a short possession for the Patriots, Florence’s Boettcher drained his seventh three of the half to bring the game within two points at 64-62.
In G-P’s ensuing possession, Larison got an offensive rebound, made a shot near the basket and was fouled with 12 seconds remaining. He hit his free throw to seal the game for the Patriots.
Patriots point guard Jacob Kessel added 11 points, while Owen Wysocki chipped in 10 points off the bench.
“We gave up way too many offensive rebounds down the stretch, and they were tougher on the glass for most of the game tonight,” Bomberg added. “It was a huge difference in the game.”
Patrick Millan drained 16 points, while sophomore Dominic DeMuri added 10 points in the losing effort for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats, who drop to 0-2 on the season, travel to non-conference foe Gillett tonight. The Patriots return home, and host NLC opponent White Lake on Monday night at Goodman-Armstrong Creek High School.
“In the end, we survived this one. Florence plays tough, they’re a young team, but they’re tough. They have a lot of potential moving forward,” Nutt said. “It’s a good win for us and I am glad to be at 4-0.”
There was no JV contest.
