Laona-Wabeno’s press too much for Florence girls

FLORENCE, Wis. — With three players scoring in double figures and a smothering full court press, Laona-Wabeno powered past Florence 72-26 in Northern Lakes Conference girls basketball here Monday night.
Kylie Higgins paced the Lady Rebels with a game-high 15 points, followed by Kaylyn LaRock with 12 and Kiara Moravec with 10. The Rebels (17-3) were not only dominant on defense, but smooth offensively, getting good looks at the basket with crisp ball movement.
Before anyone in attendance got comfortable in their seats after the pregame Parents Night festivities, it was 11-0 Rebels.
“I knew coming into this game, what we were up against versus Laona with their press,” said Florence head coach Brad Perry. “Tonight, we wanted to focus on doing the first thing we need to do once the ball is in our hands. When teams speed us up like this, we panic because we’re thinking about our second and third things we need to do in a set play.”
“They’re so fast, our girls were gassed a couple of minutes into the game,” Perry added. “That’s a team that plays at that high rate of speed all the time, and we just can’t keep up. They’re the most aggressive team we play, both on offense and defense.”
The Rebels are able to play their high speed style of basketball with eight different players, said head coach Andrew Harrison.
“Our press is something new for us this year. This is the deepest team I have had since I have been the varsity coach here,” he said. “We get good minutes and can keep pressing three players into our bench and the production doesn’t drop off.”
Harrison noted that after a 2-2 start to the season, the Rebels reeled off 13 wins in a row before losing their second game of the season to NLC leader Crandon about 10 days ago.
It was also Senior Night for the Ladycats, as Perry and the team honored the lone senior on the team, Lacey Enders, at halftime.
“Lacey is the only girl left playing from my first season as JV coach, four years ago. She’s our team leader and we’ll miss her next year,” Perry said.
Freshman Isabella Millan led Florence with 10 points.
The Ladycats travel to Crandon tonight for a NLC makeup game from Jan. 15. Florence, who slips to 6-12 with the loss Monday night, hosts non-conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas to finish the regular season Thursday night.
On Feb. 9 at 7 p.m., No. 4 seed Florence will host No. 5 seed Elcho in an opening round WIAA Division 5 tournament game.
