Nordics turn up the ‘D’
North Dickinson zone stifles Forest Park in Skyline game

FELCH TOWNSHIP — With three players scoring in double figures and a swarming 3-2 zone defense, North Dickinson overwhelmed rival Forest Park 52-17 in Skyline Central Conference girls basketball Thursday night at the Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium.
Junior point guard Ashton Hord led all scorers with 18 points, while Vanessa Lindholm added 11 points and Micah Lindholm chipped in 10 points for the Nordics.
After a sloppy start, the Nordics defense began to shut the Trojans down, and continued to do so throughout the game. Plus, ND was getting and taking better shots in their half-court offensive sets.
“I thought all the girls played extremely hard tonight,” said ND head coach Kirk Mattson. “A big key tonight was the girls’ communication with our baseline defenders talking about cutters. This is how I thought we could play defense, the way we played tonight.”
North Dickinson was also able to control the glass on both ends of the floor for most of the game, which also limited FP offensively.
“Ashton played very unselfish tonight, and Vanessa Lindholm and Chrislyn Inglese shot with accuracy and confidence tonight. All of that was great to see,” Mattson added. “It was a great team win tonight.”
A highlight for the Trojans was leading scorer senior Lea LaChapelle draining four treys to finish with 12 points. Fellow senior Amya Johnson nailed a jumper at the buzzer to end the third period.
“We didn’t do a good job of breaking through the top three players in their zone defense, it was too much for us tonight,” said Trojans head coach Kim Bjork. “Our goal was to try to get the ball inside, but their (ND) defense is so intense, they’re in our passing lanes, they trap as soon as our guards get the ball and they swarmed our inside players as well.”
Bjork noted that the Trojans are giving up too many second chance shots and committing too many turnovers.
Twenty-seven seconds into the game, play was halted when the basketball got wedged between the rim and the backboard. Referee John Schultz got an ovation from the crowd after finally knocking the ball loose with another ball, after several tries.
The Trojans, who fall to 1-2 (1-1 SCC) on the season, travel to non-conference foe Calumet on Tuesday. FP hosts SCC foe Bark River-Harris on Thursday.
The FP at Superior Central game that was moved from Monday to Wednesday of this week ended up not being played, due to a lack of officials, and will be not be made up.
North Dickinson improves to 2-2 (2-2 SCC) and travels to SCC foe Rapid River on Monday, before hosting SCC opponents Bark River-Harris on Wednesday and Carney-Nadeau on Thursday.
In the JV contest, the Trojans won 40-21. Riley Van Sickle led all scorers with 14 points for the Trojans, while Beth Nocerini chipped in 10 points.
