Gladstone, Esky win track meet

Iron Mountain’s Ruble, Maycroft claim firsts at triangular

GLADSTONE — It was nearly an ideal day to set track and field records, and Ethan Milam seized the opportunity.

The Gladstone senior won high jump Tuesday with a school-record leap of six feet, six inches, topping the previous mark (6-5) by Tony Cretens in 1994.

“The nice weather was definitely a factor,” said Milam. “I hit the bar on my first jump, then my dad came over and told me, ‘it’s all mental.’ He told me to tune everything out and concentrate on getting over the bar. I wasn’t sure I got over it at first.”

The Gladstone boys won the triangular meet with 119 points. They were followed by Escanaba 59 and Iron Mountain 15.

Milam also won long jump (17-9) for the Braves, who collected 11 firsts.

Junior Luke Ruble provided Iron Mountain with its lone first on the boys side in the 3200 (11:26.11).

“We were missing a lot of people (due to baseball and golf),” said Mountaineers’ coach Karen Ellis. “Overall, I’m very happy with how the kids pushed themselves.”

Escanaba’s girls were winners at 91 1/2, followed by Gladstone 48 1/2 and Iron Mountain 34.

Sophomore Chloe Maycroft won high jump (4-11) for the Mountaineers and helped Iron Mountain win the 400 relay.

Esky and Gladstone resume in Friday’s Negaunee Invitational. Iron Mountain is entered in Tuesday’s Kingsford Invite.
