IM?takes sprint, high jump victories at Mid-Pen meet

NEGAUNEE — A year ago there was no opportunity to compete for a conference track championship because of COVID-19.

The Gladstone boys, however, discovered a good thing was worth waiting for as they retained their Mid-Peninsula Conference track title with 159 3/4 points.

The Braves, crowned league champions in 2019, were followed by Negaunee, 118, and Iron Mountain, 96.

“We’re very happy,” said Braves coach Gary Whitmer. “We were missing a couple guys, and the kids knew how close it was going to be. Negaunee took 1-2-4-5 in shot put, and Peter (Noblet) broke it up by placing third. It was a perfect day for a meet, and Negaunee did a nice job running it.”

The Negaunee girls captured the title Monday for the 11th straight time with 150 1/2 points, followed by Westwood, 89, and Gladstone, 74.

“I’m very proud of the girls,” said Negaunee coach Vickie Paupore. “This is a great victory. Our team is real deep.”

In the boys’ meet, Gladstone senior Blake Servant won four events including the 110-meter hurdles in 15.61 seconds, the 300s (personal-best 41.67), long jump at 19 feet, 10 inches and discus (151-6).

Iron Mountain swept the sprint relays. Dante Basanese won the 100 (11.65). Joe Dumais then took the 200 (24.22), edging Basanese by .09 second.

“This was absolutely a good showing for us,” said Mountaineers’ coach Karen Ellis. “We had good attendance and were able to fill most of the events, and the weather definitely helped. Winning the (D-2) regional was really nice. Everybody contributed and I’m very happy with the team support. We had a lot of qualifiers (for the Upper Peninsula Finals).”

Eliana Juchemich provided the Negaunee girls with their only first-in shot put (33-8 1/2). The Miners, however, got plenty of second through sixth-place finishers to compensate for that.

Iron Mountain copped the sprint relays and Chloe Maycroft took high jump (4-9).

Ishpeming freshman Lola Korpi was a triple-winner, taking the 800 (2:32.63), 1600 (5:38.99) and 3200 (12:29.57).
