Niagara earns season’s 1st win

Freshman Holmes tosses 5-inning no-no

NIAGARA, Wis. — Pitcher Blake Holmes threw a five-inning no-hitter and Niagara pounded out 13 hits as the Badgers broke into the win column with a 11-1 defeat of Marinette-Oconto Conference foe Gillett-Suring here Thursday afternoon.

Holmes fanned nine hitters, and allowed only one base runner who managed to score on a stolen base and an error by the Badgers.

“I am really happy for the boys to get our first win,” said Niagara head coach Dean Neveau. “To have them put a whole game together and hold the lead was great to see.”

Neveau praised the great pitching performance from Holmes, a complete game for the Badgers freshman.

At the plate, Christian Hedmark had four RBIs, while Ross Shampo drove in three for the Badgers. Senior Dawson Lincoln had two hits and four stolen bases. Hedmark, Cody Bath and Mason Richtig each had two hits.

Niagara finishes their regular season this afternoon with their final home game of the season, entertaining non-conference foe Laona-Wabeno.

Niagara will compete in the M&O Conference tournament, beginning next week versus St. Thomas Aquinas Academy at Marinette, with the time and date to be determined.
