Wykons defeat Flivvers

West Iron stays undefeated; KHS Invitational awaits

West Iron No. 1 doubles player Logan Horton, foreground, sends the ball over the net to Kingsford’s Caleb Boone, left, and Christina Glodowski, as the Wykons’ Drew Hebert, right, follows the ball in a Great Northern Conference tennis match at the Nelson Field courts on Wednesday in Stambaugh.

STAMBAUGH — In Great Northern Conference boys tennis, West Iron stayed undefeated with a 7-1 win Wednesday at the Nelson Field courts in Stambaugh. “Kingsford is young and raw at many positions but they played with a lot of intensity and energy. We were challenged at the top two doubles spots in many of the points,” said veteran West Iron head coach Joe Serbentas.

“Logan (Horton) and Drew (Hebert) at No. 1 doubles were able to read some of their opponents’ tendencies and take advantage, poaching off some shots at the net as the match progressed. All of our singles players played with a purpose, moving the ball to get their opponents out of position finishing points quickly.”

The Flivvers’ lone win on the day was at No. 2 doubles, with Isaac Nash and Ben Trevillian winning in three sets, (6-1, 1-6, 6-1). Kingsford returns to action this afternoon as they travel to GNC foe Marquette.

“Overall the experience of playing three nights in a row was a nice test of our mentality and durability,” Serbentas added.

West Iron (5-0) returns to action on Saturday morning in the Kingsford Invitational.
