HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos got a home sweep, 3-0 (25-2, 25-4, 25-10) Tuesday night in a Skyline Central Conference volleyball dual against the Norway Knights.

Broncos coach Jen Ives said the contest against the young and rebuilding Knights gave Bark River the chance to try some new things. She also gave credit to the young Norway team for not giving up.

“Tonight’s game gave us the opportunity to work on a lot of stuff we wanted to try,” Ives said. “We moved girls all out of system just to see how they’d respond. You don’t typically get the chance to do that in season.

“To Norway’s credit, they are mostly freshmen, and they didn’t give up. It’s exciting to see where they’re going to be in a couple years when the girls are juniors and seniors.”

One of the biggest highlights of the night for the Broncos was a record-breaking performance by Tressa Ives.

Tressa Ives broke the school record for aces in a match with 21 on the night — including five consecutive to win the third set. The record was previously set by Aspen Frederick earlier this year in another home match against the North Central Jets.

Alaska Peterson led Bark River in kills with six while Carley Varoni had six assists.

Coach Ives said it was an all-around team performance.

“I think all around everyone did well,” she said. “They tried different spots, they all stepped up to the challenge and whenever I said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna throw you here,’ they’re all like, ‘Ok coach! Put me in.” So, it was a testimony to the girls.”

Norway coach Erika Harnden said that the Lady Knights — whose roster has eight freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors and no seniors — were able to take several positives away from the match against Bark River.

“I was impressed with the fact the girls could still receive the ball,” Harnden said. “With Bark River, they have really good servers. They were able to receive the ball and just because the volley didn’t go in our favor it doesn’t mean they weren’t able to get a hand on it or a second hit even. It’s one of those things that if they just keep serving aces at us, it’s a different story, but (we) were able to get underneath it and, to us, that’s a huge thing we’ve been working on.”

Overall, it has been a season of development for the Knights.

“It’s been a learning year for us,” Harnden said. “The girls’ attitudes have been great. That’s impressive. Sometimes we’ve lost 25-0, and that’s tough. … But, it’s something that doesn’t break their spirit, which I think is awesome, and they keep coming back.”

Norway travels to North Central on Monday for a SCC match.
