NEGAUNEE — There’s a new No. 1 team in the 11-player ranks of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters U.P. Football poll. Menominee took over the top spot this week after a 34-13 win on the road at Marquette on Friday.

Undefeated and defending MHSAA Division 2 state champion North Central remains the No. 1 team on the 8-player side. The Jets are also the top-ranked team in the state again in this week’s AP Prep State Football Poll in all of 8-player.

The 7-0 Forest Park Trojans remain as the No. 2 team in the 8-player U.P. poll. The Trojans are ranked No. 8 in the AP state poll.

Marquette dropped to No. 2 in the 11-player poll, while Negaunee and Westwood, who will play on Oct. 22 to wrap up the regular season, are now tied at No. 3, followed by Calumet. Kingsford, who lost at Wrightstown, Wis., 35-0 on Friday, dropped out of this week’s 11-player poll.

Pickford is ranked third while Ontonagon and Munising are tied for No. 4 in the 8-player poll, with Newberry dropping out.

The UPSSA’s five-voter panel for the 2021 football season is: Jason Juno, Ironwood Daily Globe; Rob Roos of the Sault Evening News; John Vrancic of the Escanaba Daily Press; Mike Ludlum of WLUC-TV6 and Matt “Sweets” McCarthy of the Iron Mountain Daily News.
