Badgers pounce on Knights

(Dennis Mansfield/Daily News photo) Norway’s Jada Freudinger (31) can’t prevent Niagara’s Bailey Pearson (21) from hauling in a rebound during the Badgers’ home win Friday night.

NIAGARA — Mallory Sanicki scored 11 of her 16 points in the first half as the Niagara Badgers jumped out to a 23-point halftime lead over Norway on their way to a 55-30 non-conference victory Friday night in Niagara.

“We started out strong tonight and Mallory scored the first seven points of the game for us, I think,” Niagara coach Karl Lamoreaux said. “Everything clicked for us. I’ve been waiting for us to play a complete game and tonight was it.”

Josie Rock and Morgan Borchardt joined Sanicki in double figures with 13 points each for the Badgers (4-1).

“The one characteristic of this team is we have a number of girls that can score,” Lamoreaux said. “Everybody contributed and we played played good defense. Our pressure worked and we took Norway out of the game.”

Norway, which scored only 10 points in the first half, was led by Hannah Burklund and Andi Carlson, each with seven points. The Knights fall to 2-1 with the loss.

“Niagara overmatched us in every element of the game,” Knights coach Joe Tinti said. “They are a solid team and it gave us an example to get to as the season goes on.”
