MARQUETTE — Two Iron Mountain wrestlers and two Kingsford wrestlers won titles at the U.P. Championships held at Marquette on Saturday.
Iron Mountain senior Parker Stroud (152 pounds) and sophomore Alex Wilson (103), along with Kingsford senior Toby Wilcox (145) and junior Josh Peterson (171), stood atop the podium in their respective weight classes after the day’s events.
Stroud (18-6) defeated Jacob Berry of Manistique by technical fall to win his trophy, while Wilson (17-3) pinned Wyatt Westman of Kingsford at 0:57 to capture his.
Meanwhile, Wilcox (19-2) edged top-seeded senior Dillon Raab of Bark River-Harris 8-6 in the finals and Josh Peterson (24-4) pinned Iron Mountain sophomore Fulton Stroud at 1:40 in his final match of the day.
Overall, the Mountaineers compiled 173.5 points to finish second behind team champion Gladstone (212). Kingsford finished with 136 points and took fifth in the team standings.
“We had nine wrestlers come home with medals,” Iron Mountain coach Cory McLaren said. “Anytime you can come home with nine medals, you have to be happy as a coach. And to have five in the finals was exciting.”
Other Mountaineer medalists included Shawn McGuire (second at 119), Tyler Winch (third at 125), Daniel Manier (fifth at 130), Isaac Manier (second at 140), Evan Haferkorn (third at 145), Mason Kivi (third at 160) and Fulton Stroud (second at 171).
Kingsford brought eight wrestlers to the meet, five of which made the semifinals. Westman (103) finished second, Elizin Rouse (215) took third, Reed DeGroot (130) placed fourth and Trent Maki (140) wound up fifth.
“With only eight wrestlers, we did really well,” Kingsford coach Darren Groleau said. “We are on track to be where we want to be.”
The Flivver boss praised all his wrestlers and their efforts. He said DeGroot has made great improvements for a freshman, Rouse opened up a lot of eyes, Westman was aggressive all day, Peterson pinned all of his opponents and was “just an animal,” and Wilcox’s championship was “awesome for all the time and effort he’s put in.'”
The two schools get back to regular-season matches this week. Iron Mountain hosts its quadrangular on Tuesday and Kingsford heads to the Bark River-Harris Triangular on Thursday.
