Badgers stop three-game skid
NIAGARA, Wis. — Tommy Martin scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half and Niagara rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat visiting Suring 56-52 in a M&O Conference boys basketball game on Tuesday night.
The Badgers (4-6, 3-3) stopped a three-game losing streak with the victory.
“We played very hard tonight and won the game because of our defensive pressure,” Niagara coach Terry Youren said. “Nice win.”
Martin got scoring support from junior Logan Weber, who recorded 17 points. Weber helped keep the Badgers in the game in the opening half when he scored 13 of his 18 points.
Suring hurt itself by making just 6 of 19 free throws. Meanwhile, Niagara sank 15 of 18.
Wykons start well but fall
NEGAUNEE — The undersized West Iron County girls basketball team stayed with the Negaunee Miners and 6-foot-1-inch Division 2 recruit Alyssa Hill for a half, but eventually the Miners wore the Wykons down in their 67-38 West Pac Conference win Tuesday at Lakeview Memorial Gym in Negaunee.
The Wykons (2-5, 1-4) trailed just 13-12 after one quarter and kept their deficit to 29-20 at the halftime break.
“We played really well in the first half,” West Iron coach Erich Shamion said. “It was our best two quarters of the season so far. I think we caught Negaunee off guard with our aggressiveness.
“Their size was too much to handle in the second half. (But) I like the effort that the girls play with.”
Hill led the Miners (6-4, 1-4) with 16 points, while Danica Shamion topped the Wykons with 17. Shamion drew several fouls and ended up shooting 15 for 19 from the free throw stripe. Haiden Gill added nine points for West Iron, all on 3-pointers.
Ladycats go cold in defeat 52-28
CRANDON, Wis. — The Florence girls basketball team has compiled seven wins in its first 11 games this season, but is still seeking that big victory over a top team.
“We’re in that stage where against the really good teams, we haven’t put two good halves together,” coach Brad Perry said after his Ladycats fell to Northern Lakes Conference leader Crandon 52-28 on Tuesday night in Crandon. “This game, we played well in the first half. One of these days we’re going to catch one of those teams with two good halves, but we’re a young team and it is a growing experience.”
The Cardinals (4-1 in the Northern Lakes) held a 29-20 at halftime. Prior to a late spurt, Crandon was only ahead of the Ladycats (7-4, 2-3) by three.
“We felt really good about where we were at,” Perry said. “But in the second half, we just couldn’t hit shots.”
Florence shot just 2 of 15 in the second half as the methodical Cardinals squeezed the Ladycats possession by possession. Florence was outscored in the final 18 minutes 22-8.
Isabella Millan topped the Ladycats with 13 points, Victoria Peterson added eight and Kamdan Johnson chipped in with seven. No other Florence player scored.
