GREEN BAY, Wis. — Only three members of the Florence varsity wrestling team traveled to Green Bay for the Green Bay United Scramble on Jan. 8, but the trio posted solid showings at the invitation to make the trip worthwhile, including winning one weight class.

Breyson Kelley led the Bobcats, winning all five of his matches on the day to take first place at 160 pounds.

Teammate Sophia Wagner literally stepped up at the event, moving up from 106 pounds to wrestle in the 113-pound class, where she took third after going 1-3 on the day.

“Sophia wrestled tough, just missing out on second place, losing a tough match in OT,” said Florence coach Ed Kelley.

And, after being out due to health reasons, Bobcat Jacob Smith made his wrestling debut and finished seventh place at 160 pounds with a 0-4 record at the invitational.

“After Jacob’s first two matches, he began to settle down and show improvement,” Kelley added.

Florence will next compete in the Ray Mariucci Invitational in Kingsford this Saturday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
