Hoops Wrap: Rusty Flivvers pull away for victory over Forest Park

(Terry Raiche photo) Forest Park sophomore guard Felix Quevedo (15) can’t prevent Kingsford’s Ben Trevillian (20) from getting to the basket for a shot during Monday night’s boys varsity clash in Crystal Falls. The visiting Flivvers walked off the court with a 52-28 win, with Trevillian chipping in 12 points.

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Kingsford Flivvers boys varsity basketball team hadn’t played a game in three weeks prior to Monday’s contest at Forest Park.

And while it took the Flivvers some time to settle in, they eventually pulled away from the Trojans for a 52-28 nonconference victory at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.

Nic Nora led three Kingsford players in double figures with 16 points, while Ben Trevillian scored 12 and Michael Meneguzzo added 11.

With their victory, the UPSSA Division 1 third-ranked Flivvers have now won three straight and sport a 4-1 record.

“We were excited to be back after three weeks of not having a game,” Kingsford coach Dan Olkkonen said. “Took us the first half to knock the rust off but finally figured it out in the second.

“Forest Park played scrappy on defense and deliberate on offense. We stepped up with pressure on ‘D’ and created some turnovers and some easy buckets,” the coach added.

The teams played to an 8-all stalemate in the first quarter before Kingsford outscored the Trojans 14-4 in the second to take control of the game.

Michael Saario led Forest Park (2-4) with five points and Gaven Rintala chipped in with five. The Trojans scuffled offensively for the third straight game.

Forest Park is averaging just 30.3 points per game over that stretch after scoring 149 points in its first two games of the season.

Knights hammer Wykons 67-18

IRON RIVER — Eleven Norway players scored as the Knights made quick work of West Iron in their 67-18 nonconference boys basketball victory Monday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium in Iron River.

Nolan Amundson led the way for Norway (4-2) with 10 points. Michael Peterson registered nine points, Alex Ortman scored eight, and Blake Dishaw and Gabe Ochs added seven each.

The Knights led 12-4 after the opening quarter and increased their lead to 30-6 by halftime.

“It was a good team win,” Norway coach Jeff Gallino said. “Everyone got in and contributed.”

West Iron (0-5) failed to score 25 points for the fourth time this season and the Wykons are averaging just 22 points per game. Daniel James scored five points in the fourth quarter to lead the Wykons in scoring.

“The team needs to box out better on the boards and (improve) shooting the basketball,” West Iron coach Curt Olexa said. “We did improve on breaking the press, and the effort was better.”

CRANDON, Wis. — Patrick Milan and Logan Schuls scored 13 points each to go with 12 from Dominic DeMuri and 10 by William Kelley to lead Florence to a 58-49 Northern Lakes Conference victory over Crandon.
