Mountaineers capture top spot at Munising tourney
MUNISING — The Iron Mountain wrestling squad stayed unbeaten on the year by capturing five dual wins and the championship trophy at the Munising Holiday wrestling tournament Dec. 29
The Mountaineers (7-0) defeated St. Ignace 60-18, Newberry 66-18, Manistique 72-6, Gwinn 72-0 and Bark River-Harris/North Central 54-30.
“It was a great day for us and it’s been a long time since we brought a trophy home,” head coach Cory McLaren. “We were able to cover 12 out of 14 weight classes and that’s huge in these kinds of tournaments.”
Eight Mountaineers went undefeated on the day — Shayna Hruska (103 pounds), Tyler Winch (119), Shawn McGuire (125), Isaac Manier (140), Evan Haferkorn (152), Parker Stroud (160), Bradon Walstrom (171) and Bradon Farragh (215).
McGuire was named tournament MVP, while Stroud picked up his 100th career win.
Iron Mountain returns to the mat Thursday at a quad in Negaunee.
