Bobcats grapplers struggle at conference duals
THREE LAKES, Wis. — The day could have gone better for the Florence varsity wrestling team at the North Lakes Conference dual invitational on Friday at Three Lakes. The short-handed Bobcats struggled, with just four wrestlers at the invitational. In its first match of the day, Florence fell to No. 12 ranked Crandon 66-3. Breyson Kelley, wrestling at 152 pounds, scored the Bobcats’ only points on a 4-3 decision over Crandon’s Cole Shepard. Florence next lost to Laona-Wabeno-Three Lakes 54-12 and then to Elcho 24-12. Crandon defeated Laona-Wabeno-Three Lakes to win their second consecutive conference championship. Despite Friday’s struggles, Florence still has a chance to make its mark in the postseason when it travels to Coleman on Feb. 12 for the WIAA regional tournament. “(We) will be competing against the host, Coleman, Crivitz, Crandon, Elcho and Laona-Wabeno-Three Lakes,” said Florence coach Ed Kelley. “The top two wrestlers in each weight class move onto Sectionals in Shawano the following Saturday.” According to Kelley, Coleman is currently ranked No. 1 in the state. The team winner of the regional tournament will compete in Suring on Feb. 15 in the team sectionals.
