Hoops wrap: Mountaineers notch road win
MANISTIQUE — The Iron Mountain girls varsity basketball team scored its first road win of the season on Thursday night, taking out Manistique 48-34 in a Mid-Peninsula Conference contest.
Senior Annslee Runsat poured in a season-high 20 points to lead the way for Iron Mountain. Emma Ellis and Callie Bianco added 10 points each.
“I’m really happy with how we moved the ball around tonight,” Iron Mountain coach Karen Ellis said. “We found the open person and hit our outside shots. The girls shot very well from the free throw line (18 of 25) as well.”
The Mountaineers led 10-7 after the first quarter and the game stayed close until the fourth. Bianco and Runsat led the way down the stretch with eight and seven points, respectively, as Iron Mountain outscored the Emeralds (2-11) 17-8 in last period.
“Our defense was scrappy, but we do need to improve our help defense to stay out of foul trouble,” Coach Ellis said.
Norway stops streak
POWERS — The Norway Knights girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Thursday night with a 45-21 victory over North Central in Skyline Central Conference play at Powers.
Andi Carlson was the sparkplug for the Knights (7-8) as she finished with 19. Hannah Burklund chipped in with nine.
“Andi Carlson had a big night offensively and her teammates did a good job getting her the ball,” Norway coach Joe Tinti said.
Norway was in control throughout, leading 22-9 at halftime and then 35-10 after three quarters.
“We played excellent defense and were able to keep their shooters from getting into a rhythm,” Tinti added.
Samantha Burton and Ashtyn Smith led the Jets (2-8) with six points each.
Nordics fall to Broncos
FELCH TOWNSHIP — Bark River-Harris took a 12-4 lead after the first quarter against host North Dickinson on Thursday night and made that stand up for a 38-31 Skyline Central Conference victory.
Cara Zawacki scored eight points in the first quarter to help the Broncos (8-5) grab a 12-4 lead. Zawacki finished with a game-high 15 points.
North Dickinson coach Kirk Mattson said his team got off to a slow start, but after that, the teams engaged in a determined battle.
“It was a good game,” Mattson said. “Both teams really played hard defense. We had plenty of opportunities and chances to win the game.”
The Nordics pulled to within one at halftime, but went cold in the third quarter with just three points.
“I think the exertion we put out on defense affected the offensive side,” Mattson said. “We’ve just got to keep our heads up, keep working hard and it will come.”
Chrislyn Inglese led North Dickinson (8-6) with 10 points.
Quick start sinks WIC
IRON RIVER — Escanaba sophomore Keira Maki scored eight of her 16 points in the opening quarter as the Eskymos sprinted out to a 20-4 lead en route to a 52-26 victory over West Iron County in a non-conference girls basketball game at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium in Iron River.
Maki got scoring assistance from junior Mari Bink who scored 16 points and Katelyn Stalboerge who added 12 for Escanaba (8-5).
On the other hand, West Iron (5-10) couldn’t get untracked offensively.
“Escanaba has a nice team that has a lot of length,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said. “We had a hard time scoring against them in the first and fourth quarters. We didn’t help ourselves at the free throw line, either.”
The Wykons, who were led in scoring by Brynlee Nodurft’s nine points, connected on just 8 of 24 free throws in the game.
Bobcats pound Suring
FLORENCE, Wis. — The Florence Bobcats set a season high in points on Thursday night, routing Suring 86-31 in a non-conference boys varsity basketball game at Florence High School.
Evan Johnson led four Bobcats in double figures with 24 points. Patrick Milan added 14, William Kelley contributed 11 and Logan Schuls scored 10.
Florence improved to 13-4 with the victory.
“Just a nice outing for our ballclub,” Bobcats coach Bryan Bomberg said. “We are narrowing our focus on certain aspects of the game and I believe it’s starting to show. We have a better focus, we are relying on our bench more and they are producing for us. We are going to keep building and learning together.”
