Annual tourney crowns champions

HERMANSVILLE — Five champions were crowned this weekend as the 83rd Annual Gold Medal Classic basketball tournament ended Sunday.

Perrronville Bloniarz Farms captured the Class B title in an 86-70 triumph over Carney Juiced Apparel.

Adam Nolde led Bloniarz with 22 points. Former Northern Michigan University cager Jared Benson added 21. Kingsford graduate Geoff Smart hit 18. Bryce Bilski scored 12, and Justin Bloniarz had 10.

Grand Valley State, Menominee grad and Class B Outstanding Player Jason Boucher scored 22 for Carney. Carney-Nadeau coach Mike Polfus tossed in 20, and Jake Polfus had 11.

Four other men’s titles were decided Friday night.

Bloniarz also defeated Juiced Apparel 97-85 in Sunday’s opener.

Marcus Harris led the way with 27 points. Nolde hit 26. Bilski tallied 17 and Benson had 10.

Joe Pontbriand paced Carney with 23 points. Jake Hogberg scored 17. Boucher added 14 and Mike Polfus had 11.

Nolde hit 27 points Saturday as Bloniarz romped past Hancock U.P. Finest 89-56. Harris added 21, and Tyler Price had 11. Jon Wergin scored 13. Austin Carlson tossed in 11, and Marcus Baine had 10 for U.P. Finest.

Juiced Apparel opened with an 86-77 triumph over Marinette Wagner Insurance Saturday.

Bryan LaChapelle paced Juiced Apparel with 20 points. Boucher scored 17. Pontbriand hit 12, and Jake Brock had 11. Asia Pollazo led Marinette with 21. Former Bay College player Matt Wagner scored 17, and Jake Postzl hit 16.

Boucher poured in 42 points as Juiced Apparel then rolled past Menominee Dexter’s 99-78.

Mike Polfus added 26. Pontbriand scored 18 and LaChapelle tallied 10. Ewen-Trout Creek senior Caden Borseth led Dexter’s with 18. Menominee senior Cooper Conway hit 16, and Maroons’ teammates Aidan Bellisle and Brady Schultz had 15 and 14, respectively.

Schultz hit 22 in Dexter’s 73-70 triumph over U.P. Finest. Bellisle scored 19, Escanaba senior Connor Smale and Conway had 11 apiece. Carlson and River Shumate led U.P. Finest with 18 each. Wergin and Justin Cobb had 12 apiece.

The Hancock-based team salvaged a 68-65 victory over Wagner Insurance.

Carlson paced U.P. Finest with 30, and Wergin added 18. Matt Wagner scored 27, and Postzl hit 18.

Tyler Mercier scored 23 points, leading Spalding R Place past Iron Mountain Dave’s Auto 77-73 in Friday’s Class C title contest.

Outstanding Player Justin Bloniarz added 22. Troy Ekberg hit 14 and Josh Granquist tallied 10. Kyle Johnson led Dave’s with 28 and Smart had 12.

Tyler Mercier’s 21 points were enough to lead Hermansville CTR 44 past Rapid River 69-49 in the Class D final. Dawson Bilski scored 16, and Bryce Bilski had 10. Harris had 11 for Rapid River.

Outstanding Player Joe Simon hit 24, and C.J. Matthews tallied 11, leading Daggett Got Milk to a 69-49 triumph over Iron Mountain Fireplace North. Tyler Beauchamp had 19 for Iron Mountain.

In the Class E final, Matthews hit 15 points, and Noah Gorzinski scored 13 as Got Milk defeated Hermansville Stewart Manufacturing 57-46. Mitch Wilson tossed in 21, and Josh Beauchamp had 15 for Stewart’s.
