QUINNESEC — Three Kingsford hurlers combined for a four-hit shutout to lead the Flivvers to a 4-0 victory over Negaunee in varsity baseball action on Tuesday at Quinnesec Field.
Sawyer Pugh struck out five and allowed three hits in 3.2 innings, while Nic Novara fanned four and allowed one hit in 2.1 innings. Gavin Trevillian then put the finishing touches on the win by striking out the side in the seventh.
“It was our pitching and defense that kept us in the game until our offense appeared,” Kingsford coach Matt LaLonde said. “We were in some defensive trouble early on, but our pitchers, Sawyer Pugh and Nic Novara, did a nice job getting out of trouble unscathed.”
Only one Flivver reached base in the first three innings against Negaunee starter Keith Juidici, who struck out six without a walk in six innings.
LaLonde said his team started slowly offensively but gave credit to Juidici for his effort.
“Keith did a nice job for Negaunee,” he said. “The toughest thing for us is that he never gave up any free bases.”
The Flivvers broke the scoreless tie with one in the fourth and then added two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to generate the final score.
Andres Finley led Kingsford’s seven-hit attack with two singles and an RBI. Pugh drove in the other two runs for the Flivvers.
The Miners committed four errors, leading to two unearned runs. Negaunee also stranded 12 runners in the contest.

Florence regained the advantage with two in the fifth and added another in the seventh. The insurance run proved vital as Goodman-Pembine pulled to within one in the bottom of the seventh before Florence junior Evan Johnson closed the game for the save.
Cole Sweig pitched the first six innings for the Bobcats, allowing three hits. None of the three runs scored against him were earned, as Florence committed six errors.
