IRON MOUNTAIN — Despite Mother Nature’s attempts to be a wet blanket, the Iron Mountain Mountaineers were able to hold off for visiting Northland Pines for a 2-1 victory at St. Mary’s Field on Thursday afternoon in girls varsity soccer action.

Thursday’s game was the regular-season finale for the Mountaineers (3-3), after rains made the field soaked and slippery, according to Iron Mountain co-coach Carly Lambert.

“Luckily, the rain stopped right before the first whistle and held off other than some drizzle,” Lambert said. “It was hard to control the ball for both teams, a normally controlled pass would slip an extra few feet. We tried to get the players to scale it back a bit and keep their passes on the ground.”

Neither team could gain an advantage in the opening half, which ended in a 0-0 tie.

“Northland Pines played a very aggressive game, almost to the point of being dangerous,” Lambert said. “Lots of missed physicality calls against them made for some frustration from our side.”

But, the Mountaineers would answer Northern Pines’ aggression by scoring twice early in the second half.

Forward Callie Bianco, a junior captain for the Mountaineers, finished off what Lambert described as “a beautiful goal” to put Iron Mountain up 1-0 about 10 minutes into the second half.

That was followed a few minutes later by another Mountaineer tally by senior captain and center midfielder Gabby Carey, who squeaked in a shot to give Iron Mountain a 2-0 advantage.

“Gabby Carey did a great job controlling the midfield which is crucial in a physical, slippery game,” Lambert said. “I can’t say enough good things about our midfield and forwards. They really connected well last night.”

Northern Pines, however, wasn’t about to leave without a fight and scored just minutes later to close the game to 2-1. But, the Mountaineers were able to hang on for the win thanks to the efforts of sophomore goalie Emily Copley and her defensive teammates playing in front of her, despite less than optimal conditions.

“(We were so) proud of how well Emily Copley played last night,” added co-coach Bethany Fehr. “Rainy conditions can make for an unpredictable game and a lot of unlucky bounces in front of the goal. She was able to read the ball and each situation well.”

The two coaches also credited the effort of junior defenders Kilee Howe and Emma Ellis in holding Northern Pines to just one goal.

“Overall, our girls played their hearts out and were able to remain patient with their opponents despite their style of play,” Lambert said. “They deserved this win 100 percent.”

FLIVVERS 6, BLUEJAYS 0

KINGSFORD — The weather Thursday might have made the pitch at Commemorative Field a tad sloppy, but the Kingsford girls varsity soccer team proved to be sharp in a 6-0 win over visiting Three Lakes.

The shorthanded Flivvers, who were down a trio of starters, got 2 goals from both Brooke Bittinger and Maria Fornetti, as well as tallies from Peyton Johnson and Mia Counter in the shutout win.

Kingsford (11-2-2) led at intermission 4-0.

“It was kind of sloppy weather wise and play wise,” said Kingsford coach Jon Lorenzoni. “(But) Three Lakes never really threatened the entire game, which was a testament to our defense.”

“I liked what our younger girls did. They passed pretty well,” he added. “Freshman Libby Vross is playing some nice soccer. Peyton Johnson had a real nice game.”

Two Flivvers combined for the shutout win. Alyssa Englund was the starting netminder for Kingsford and played the first half, with Halle Jacobson taking over in goal in the second half.

Starting at $3.50/week.
