Prep Softball: ’Cats fall late to Laona-Wabeno

FLORENCE, Wis. — Visiting Laona-Wabeno broke a 2-all tie with 2 runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to record a 5-2 victory over Florence on Monday in a Northern Lakes Conference varsity softball contest.

The Rebels took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but then Ladycats’ pitcher Allison Woods held L-W in check until the sixth.

Meanwhile, Florence scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to pull into a 2-2 tie.

“It was a very evenly matched game,” Florence coach Dan Robinson said. “The girls played hard. It wasn’t until late in the game (that) we let it get away from us.”

Robinson said his squad had chances along the way to push more runs across the plate.

“We stranded runners in scoring position in the first, third and fifth,” he said.

Isabella Millan and Leah Young led the Ladycats’ seven-hit attack with two singles each. Hannah Holdaway, Leighton Lambert and Morgan Tomczak also singled in the game.

Woods went the distance in the circle for Florence, allowing four hits while striking out four and walking two.
