Copper Country hockey stalwart Coppo dies at 83
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Paul Coppo, one of the early prolific hockey players from the Copper Country, died June 9 at Aurora Bay Care in Green Bay, Wis.
He was 83.
Coppo, originally of Hancock, played for Michigan Tech from 1956-60. He was named All-American in 1960. He was also honored on the NCAA All-Tournament Team, All-WCHA Second Team that season.
Coppo scored 59 goals, 75 assists and 134 points in 85 games for the Huskies, an average of 1.57 points per game.
Coppo played on the U.S. Olympic team in 1964. He led the team in scoring during competition in Innsbruck, Austria.
He also played for the national team in 1962, ’65, and ’69. He also played 12 seasons for the Green Bay Bobcats, scoring 227 goals and 325 assists for 552 points as the team’s all-time leading scorer.
He then coached the Bobcats and later became an owner.
Coppo was inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
He was also part of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2004, and Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
