Mountaineer nets top Division 2 honor

ISHPEMING — Iron Mountain senior David Juul was named the Division 2 U.P. “Player of the Year” after his No. 1 singles championship in the D2 U.P. Finals on June 2.
For his efforts, Juul was also named to the Division 2 all-state team and landed a spot on the U.P. D2 first-team singles squad.
Iron Mountain No. 2 singles player Brenden LaPoint also made the first team after capturing the second singles flight title at the U.P. Finals.
West Iron County’s top singles player, Matthew Dutcher, also earned a spot on the first team, along with Andrew Niemi of Westwood and John Deatrick of Gwinn.
On the doubles side, West Iron’s Sam Holroyd and Colton Holm claimed their spot on the first-team.
Other duos on the first team included Westwood’s Ryan LaFountain and Chase Prophet, Ishpeming’s Hayden Hares and Hunter Smith and U.P. first-flight doubles champs Alex Vandzandt and Lucas Westcomb of Munising.
Iron Mountain’s Kurt Adiao Ryan and Gerald Sampoll Torres were given honorable mention on the all-U.P. team.
The U.P. Division 2 coach of the year was Sarah Massie of the champion Westwood Patriots.
