Getting better: IM shows improvement vs. Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — Iron Mountain swept the singles matches and added victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to defeat Ishpeming in the varsity girls tennis teams’ second matchup of the season, this time held during the Westwood Triangular on Thursday in Ishpeming.

The Mountaineers match against the Patriots was called by rain after the team’s completed just four matches.

The Mountaineers began their season with a match against the Hematites and settled for a tie.

“(We) were looking to see some improvements,” IM coach Marcus Celello said. “It was great to see Hailey Greenleaf and Kilee Howe pick up the win at three doubles. They played their best tennis of the season, and when they are communicating and working as a team, they are a tough out.”

In doubles, Elle Lofholm and Anja Kleiman avenged their early-season loss to Ishpeming by defeating Jenna Maki and Addison Morton 6-3, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, Greenleaf and Howe outlasted Paige Palomaki and Kaitlyn VanDeuren 7-5, 6-3.

Iron Mountain had little trouble in the singles matches. No. 1 Callie Bianco beat Maia Hemmila 6-1, 6-3 and No. 2 singles Aziza Burgoon rolled over Lilly Swanson 6-1, 6-0. Additionally, No. 3 singles Natalia Brown held off Emily DeMarios 6-4, 6-4 and No. 4 singles Rediet Husing dispatched Ava Hares 6-0, 6-2.

“I’m pleased with where we are at as a team one week before the postseason begins,” Celello added.

ESCANABA — Kingsford pushed two matches to three sets, but was unable to come up with a victory in its shutout loss to host Escanaba in a Great Northern Conference match.

No. 4 singles player Allette Shanks grabbed a one-set lead against Maggie Martin but eventually dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 decision. Additionally, No. 2 doubles team Addison Rutter and Linnea Grubb also started quickly, but Escanaba took over in the second set for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win.

“Allette Shanks played awesome,” Kingsford coach Tracy Rutter said. “Three sets and a great match. Proud of her continued progress.

“Addie and Linnea … are strong players, mesh well together but just let frustrations take over. Tennis is very challenging mentally; we are all working on not losing energy and remembering to stay positive. One point at a time.”

Coach Rutter said that despite the outcome, her players enjoyed the competition.

“(A)t the end of the day, I want them to be having fun,” the coach added. “Learn from your mistakes and move forward.”
