STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Kamdan Johnson of Florence County High School is among 32 seniors selected as a finalist to receive the 2025 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Statewide Scholar Athlete Award.
The award is presented by We Energies Foundation and Wisconsin Public Service Foundation. This year, more than 806 seniors from 415 high schools across the state were nominated for the award.
To determine the top 32 finalists, four boys and four girls were selected — based on both athletic and academic achievement — from each of the four WIAA divisions.
“Each of these outstanding student athletes has excelled in academics and athletics,” said Stephanie Hauser, executive director of the WIAA. “Their dedication both in the classroom and in competition is inspiring.”
Johnson is a three-time track and field team MVP and first team all-conference selection, bringing home back-to-back individual state championships in the 100-meter hurdles her sophomore and junior seasons.
She was selected as the Northern Lakes Conference Volleyball Player of the Year as a junior and helped her team win their regional championship her senior season. Johnson, who has a 3.94 grade-point average, shared in her essay:
“High school taught me how to overcome failure and has helped me understand that failure paints the road to achievement. It took countless hours of hard work and perseverance to see my success as a student-athlete shine through. At the end of the day, everyone experiences some form of loss or failure in their life. It’s whether or not you choose to let it define you that determines your success in the future.”
Johnson plans to study elementary education in college.
The 2025 WIAA Scholar Athlete Finalists will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Sunday, May 4, at SentryWorld in Stevens Point. The keynote speaker will be Mike “Jocko” Jacques, an award-winning, Emmy-nominated journalist and Wisconsin native.
A livestream of the awards program will be available on the websites of the State Television Network stations at 1:30 p.m. May 4. A delayed telecast of the ceremony will be aired on a future date.
