WIC, IM battle chilly weather at WestPAC meet

IRON RIVER — On a day that was more reminiscent of late fall than late May, the West Iron County and Iron Mountain track teams competed in the WestPAC Conference championships at Nelson Field in Iron River.

Among the Wykon and Mountaineer boys and girls teams, the West Iron girls finished highest with a third-place result among the nine schools competing Tuesday. The Wykon boys wound up fourth while the Mountaineer boys placed eighth and the IM girls finished ninth.

In the girls competition, Negaunee won the championship with 210.5 points followed by Houghton at 131.5 and West Iron with 53. Calumet (46), Hancock (29.5), Westwood (26), Ishpeming (15.5), Iron Mountain (7) and Gwinn (4) followed.

West Iron freshman Bristol Shamion led area individuals with two runner-up finishes. She took second in the 300 hurdles (50.3 seconds) and the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches).

Older sister Lacey added a second in the long jump with a personal record of 14-4.

West Iron’s sprint relays placed third. The 400-relay team of Cheyenne Ritchie, Lily De Sousa, Lacey Shamion and Cami Alexa recorded a time of 56.82 seconds, while the 800 relay team of Ritchie, De Sousa, Lacey Shamion and Eriana Sucholl finished with a 2:01.36.

Iron Mountain senior Bella Pickett led the Mountaineer girls with a fourth-place finish in the 100 with a 14.3. The Mountaineers’ 400 relay squad of Pickett, Emma Bouchard, Lindsey Lewandowski and Zahra Wicks finished fifth with a 59.29.

In the boys event, Houghton carried home the title with 172 points, followed by Negaunee (152), Westwood (72), West Iron (41), Calumet (31), Gwinn (29), Iron Mountain (14), Hancock (10) and Ishpeming (2).

West Iron freshman Seth Oberlin topped area boys with one second and two thirds. He finished runner-up in the 400 (56.35) and third in both the 800 (2:16.22) and the high jump (5-6).

Junior Gatlin Gillaspie earned a second-place finish in the high jump (5-6) and a third in the 200 (25.4).

Iron Mountain’s 400-relay squad of Alex Jayne, Cooper Pigeon, Evan Rodriguez and Bryce Davis took third with a time of 49.59. Additionally, Ethan Davis placed fourth in the 400 (57.98) and Bryce Davis wound up fourth in the shot put (43-5.75).
